Regretting his decision to turn down a part; congratulating him on his memoirs, particularly for conveying "most truthfully (and what an admirable lesson to beginners) how the youthful exhibitionism, which lends one confidence as a stagestruck beginner, develops with alarming suddenness into an almost pathological doubt of one's potential talents just at the very moment when one first achieves success"; commenting on the theatrical life: "The most satisfactory rewards come from the nightly contact with one's fellow players, the delight of the spontaneous moment of inspiration, the unexpectedly smooth performance, the particularly responsive audience on a certain night. These are the ephemeral joys which suddenly seem to make the whole think=g worth while, and encourage one to plod on, fighting the increasing battle between ambition and self-criticism"; commenting on the inconsistencies of audience reaction, and complaining about an error in a review.
